It has come to the last day of the course..
Surprisingly, i am getting more familiar using blogs.. and it allow me to generate more thinking questions and focus on the lesson such that i would have materials to write in it.. i am looking forward to each new day to learn more stuff and input them into the blog. I am slow at learning and the blog has really allow to rethink and consolidate what i had learned for the day.
This course has really given me a different indepth into the new environment that young learners are going into. As Dr Quek has said, we should keep ourselves updated to the changing environment and teaching new things to the learners. keeping them interested and improving on their own pace as well.
Well done to the course!!

Day 4 - Analysis of Data collected
Am class.
Today's lesson is very mind taxing. The concept of analysing the data is really powerful in terms of breaking down it to studyable reading. But, its too confusing for me.. I believe we need to have basic foundation of statisitc studying before we can fully understand it. In terms of steps, procedure in doing the analysing using SPSS program, we are able to do it, just that we need to grasp the understand the why..
SPSS has many powerful functions yet (quite) user friendly.
PM class.
Analysing of data.
We started doing the report for the post analysis. Surprisingly, we are able to compile the data and print them out. I see that this way of managing and organising the contents that we need was easier.

Day 3 - Qualitative information collected using LEI
LEI - Learning Environment Instrument
Today's lesson touched on several LEI particularly the WIHIC ( What is Happening In Class ).
The learning subject is the "School Learning Environment"
AM Class:
A. Derivation from analysing of "School Level Questionaire"
1) Following Moo's general Catergory
2) Consistency
3) Truthfulness
4) less negative statements
B. Questionaire should be :
1) Precise
2) Contain only one item
3) Similar length for all questions asked
4) Short
5) Meaningful data for collection
PM class :
The PM class started with a case study to discuss which is on " comparison on learning environment in different schools"
In this session , we discussed on one of the schools and look in depth into the overall environment thru surveys. As one of our classmates clearly pointed out, this survey was given to the teachers from that schools thus it may not clearly reflect the environment of the school. I felt likewise. It is important to know what data we wanted and collect from the intented audience. Even though, the report on this school has touched on several important points that the schools needs to address if they wanted to improve.
From these 2 days' topics on survey collecting and analysis, it has shown the importance of collecting the intented data from the correct audience. Also, by studying these datas may also in certain ways help us reflect on our own environment; and the way we do things.

Day 2 - Online survey
Today has been a great day for learning on "learning environment".
In today's PM class on survey; here are some thoughts generated:
1) The student's version of the survey has the perferred and actual events column that i think was really good. this allow us to sense the overall climate of the students in relation to the actual happenings. it also allow the lecturers to make a comparision to how they have done to match them.
2) this survey though is good has to be done discreetly/ tactfully. as it has shown in the student's version of survey, the two tables are set side by side which allows the students to make comparison themselves instead. this could meant a greater problem and making their own assumption before the lecturers could do anything.
3) the survey extends to the lecturers as well which means that it is quite a holistic survey. it also captures the climate from the lecturer to make a proper comparsion.

learning for day 1 ( 16 june 08)
My perceived management i described myself to be commanding style
( The teacher is in control and uses his judgement to allow the students to do what he wanted )
After the questionaire i did, it further proven my management style. I scored highest for the commanding/authoritative , seconded by laissez-faire( minimum interference ) , third by strict/authoritarian lastly indifferent.
My management style of commanding/authoritative could be derived from the fact that i came from the SAF. In the SAF, much of the work that we did/learn must follow the strict Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) such that we do not differ much from the original intend.
But the common problems that could emerge are the followings:
1) we follow strictly to procedure
2) we have fixed mindset
3) we are not adaptive to changes
we thus came up with several strategies that needs to be mindful but useful for this style of management.
1) quality of listening
2) learner centered; using facilitation
3) Non- judgemental
4) controlled flexibility
