learning for day 1 ( 16 june 08)

My perceived management i described myself to be commanding style

( The teacher is in control and uses his judgement to allow the students to do what he wanted )

After the questionaire i did, it further proven my management style. I scored highest for the commanding/authoritative , seconded by laissez-faire( minimum interference ) , third by strict/authoritarian lastly indifferent.

My management style of commanding/authoritative could be derived from the fact that i came from the SAF. In the SAF, much of the work that we did/learn must follow the strict Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) such that we do not differ much from the original intend.

But the common problems that could emerge are the followings:
1) we follow strictly to procedure
2) we have fixed mindset
3) we are not adaptive to changes

we thus came up with several strategies that needs to be mindful but useful for this style of management.

1) quality of listening
2) learner centered; using facilitation
3) Non- judgemental
4) controlled flexibility

Procedures are there for specific reasons! In our context, we have to be procedural and compliant. There is no two way about it. However, I would agree that a fixed mindset is an enemy of progress, and we have to adopt an open mind to learn and to accept changes in our workplace. One of the strategies that I would like to add on is change agent. People are resistant to changes. If we are skeptical, then how can we convince the rest to embrace and accept changes?
